Cherry Prepaid Astro Review

Long story short: Do not buy this phone. It has so little space that you cannot install any new apps. You cannot update the Play store which is required to use Youtube and other Google Apps. It’s a junk phone.

A look at the Cherry Mobile Astro Phone. Their launch phone for the Cherry Prepaid virtual network tie up with Globe Telecom.

For your 999 Peso you get a basic android phone, 150 peso free load (50 peso per month, over 3 months), 50 free all-network SMS and 2 days of free Facebook access.

Cherry Prepaid is just a virtual network, powered by Globe. You cannot share load between Cherry Prepaid and Globe. On first look, the sms, call and internet plans are no better than Globe; raising the question, why lock yourself into Cherry Prepaid when you could buy the same generic phone for p999 with both sim slots unlocked?

I guess the only benefit right now is that they’re giving p150 free load with the phone.

As for the phone itself, you should set your expectations. For 999 peso you’re not going to get a high end smart phone. But for basic surfing, youtube, facebook and such like, it can do the job. Albeit a bit slowly and at a low resolution.

The biggest problem for me is that the internal memory is fully occupied by the Android OS which causes warnings and errors to appear that your phone is low on storage. Adding a micro SD will help with that problem because the phone will then use the SD card as virtual memory instead of the tiny 50mb free on the ROM storage.

I wasn’t able to install new apps from the Play store because of the lack of free space. Installing to SD card or moving apps to SD card didn’t work. That’s a major problem which limits what you can do with this phone. You can sideload apps but it’s an unreliable process.

The next big problem is mobile data. I subscribed to a data plan on the Cherry Mobile sim and I was unable to get 2G or 3G mobile data to work. Removing the Cherry sim and putting it in an iphone worked.

Mobile data on the second sim was tested with a Globe sim. 2G worked but I was unable to get 3G/WCDMA to work.

The internal speaker seems a bit temperamental. Sometimes it just stops working and then starts working. apparently for no specific reason.
